Is Mixtape Really a Game? Does it even matter?
The debate over the “adventure game,” Mixtape online has been huge. Is it a game? Is it a movie? Is it awesome? Is it horrible? Is it accurate of the 1990s generation or did they get it all wrong? Is the dialogue ridiculous?
I’ve seen people debate over these things for weeks since it was release on May 7, 2026 and I’ve stopped reading. Because the bottom line is, did I like it? Do I feel like I got my money’s worth from it?

Mixtape was published by Annapurna Interaction (the same company who published Stray) and developed by Beethoven & Dinosaur (founded by musician, Johnny Galvatron). It’s available on Playstation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, PC, and XBox Series X/S.
Mixtape is for Music Lovers
If you are a younger Gen-X/older Millenial, there is a good chance you’ll enjoy this game simply for the music. The music plays a major role in the game and I enjoyed it just for that.
In fact, I enjoyed it so much, I had to look up the Mixtape Playlist (with loads of other info on the game) so I could give it a listen when I’m on the go. There’s a link to the Spotify version on the top of the list. I’m a younger Gen-X gamer so this playlist brought back a lot of memories for me. I was in my twenties in the 1990s so these song resonate with me.
Galvatron went so far to acquire the licenses to songs in the game so that they could be played in their entirety. In my opinion, this really adds to the genuineness of the game.

Does Mixtape Have Gameplay or a Plot?
The truth is, there’s very little gameplay involved in Mixtape. As I mentioned, there’s much debate over whether this is even a game or if it is more of an interactive experience. If you are a gamer that needs action, quests, and lots of things to do, this game is likely not for you. You’d be disappointed.
However, if you’re open minded and willing to spend a few hours doing very little other than just enjoying the experience and reliving a period of your life, you might enjoy this.
There are three main characters in the game – Stacy, Cassandra, and Slater. Three best friends who have graduated from high school and are about to move into adulthood – without each other.
In Mixtape, the three main characters are getting ready to go to one last bangin’ party together. The remember things they have done in the past, they seek out booze, they avoid the pigs, and generally just move very slowly from mid-afternoon to late evening.
There is a lot of memories and flashbacks. These help tell the story of the three main characters and how they have become so close. But there’s also some conflict as Stacy messes with their plans of a post-grad road trip.
One of the things I love (but apparently many others have not) is the flying scenes. The characters get lost in their experience and imagination and fly through fields and starry skies and even in cars. Personally, I enjoyed these scenes. Like I said, be prepared for a slow game.

I’m not going to act like this is the perfect game. It’s not. For anyone, apparently.
But I really enjoyed the experience and to be honest, I can see myself running through the game again. It’s a shorter game and can be completed in about 4-5 hours so I might stream it just for fun. I think it might bring up some interesting conversation.
I would have liked a little more to do. The “action” f the game mostly involves looking for memories in a room or recording at the dinosaur park. Simple stuff. But it would have been cool if there had been some missions. Like, “Go find Jenny Fucking Goodspeed, and give her a piece of your mind.” LOL. That would be fun. We don’t like Jenny, in case you didn’t guess.
I love the visuals, I love the music, I love the memories. That’s enough for me. I don’t regret the money I spent on it and I’m happy to have had the experience of Mixtape.
