If you have been playing Animal Crossing New Horizons for a long time, you’ve likely already asked yourself if you should restart your ACNH island. Some ACNH players might not be there yet. But you will be. It’s pretty much inevitable.

Before you take the big step, I want to talk about the repercussions of restarting your island on Animal Crossing. And also, the benefits, because it’s not all bad.

Why Would You Want to Restart Your ACNH Island????

You’ve put hundreds, maybe even thousands, of hours into playing Animal Crossing New Horizons. Why would anyone even consider deleting all that work and starting from scratch? It sounds insane. Yet, ACNH players do it all the time. Why?

I’ve done a restart and for me it was pure boredom. I was doing the same things every day and my heart just wasn’t in it. And then I just stopped playing it as much. I still loved the game, but it just didn’t seem to matter anymore if I got on and talked to my villagers or caught fish or bugs. They would all be their later and I didn’t really have any major goals to accomplish.

Some people restart their ANCH game because they wish they’d done things differently. Maybe they time travelled a lot or went to treasure islands and they wish they had played the game more authentically (personally, I think all ways of playing the game are authentic). For me, I went to a treasure island, got bells and deposited them on the island, and came back to maxed out bells. After that, I just wasn’t sure what the point of playing was anymore.

Many players of Animal Crossing New Horizons reach a point where the love of the game just isn’t there anymore. And that makes a fresh start on ACHN very appealing.

Reasons NOT to Restart Your ACNH Island

I want to start with some reasons why you absolutely should not reastart your Animal Crossing New Horizons Island because this is not for the casual player.

If you restart you island on ACNH, you need to know this is permanent. You can’t go back. You can’t change your mind and redownload your old game or something like that. Once it’s done, it’s done.

Do you remember the monotony at the beginning of the game? Hit the rocks, shovel breaks, gather rocks and sticks, make new one. Shake the trees. Hit the trees. Look for decor. Make a fishing rod. Catch some fish. Fishing rod breaks. Make a new one. Make a net. Catch some bugs. Net breaks. Make a new one.

And on and on. The beginning takes time to get through. And a lot of it is just repeating the same steps over and over again. Are you ready for that.

Then there is bells. You have nothing to start. And lets be honest, you need bells to do anything really fun. You need bells to upgrade your house, buy decor, and make your island interesting. If you restart your ACNH island, you’re going to leave behind any bells you have accumulated.

What about your villagers? Are you ready to say goodbye to them? You’re going to completely start over with two starter villagers (who, let’s face it, are often not the ones you really like) and then you have to build houses for new ones and try to find villagers that suit you/your future island vibe.

Possible Solutions to Restarting Issues

There are some ways around all of this if you are creative. It depends on what kind of restart you want to do. For some people, they want to restart completely fresh. That’s fine. But if you want to avoid some of the frustrations of a restart here are some things you might consider:

• Take some of your favorite furnishings, decor, and some bells to a friends island for storage for a few days. Between the two of you, you can bring them back to your new island. You have to have an Nintendo online subscription for this, of course.
• Buy some amiibo cards so you can choose villagers (not including the two that you start with) and have the ones you want.
• Have a friend bring you one of each fruit and each vegetable. Plant massive gardens and orchards. You have lots of space in the beginning anyway. Water them and harvest daily and you’ll see your bells grow super fast when you sell your produce.

Benefits of Restarting Your ANCH Island

Restarting is not all negatives. For many people, it is the thing they need to rediscover their love of Animal Crossing New Horizons.

I have restarted my island once so far and I can see myself doing it again in the future. I had no regrets after restarting. In fact, it was the best thing for me because I rediscovered my love of the game. Yes, there was a lot of grinding, but I found that I enjoyed the grind. I had a list of things to do each day.

When I started out the second time, I had a few “rules” that I followed. No treasure islands, no time travel. It gave me a challenge. It was fun for a time.

When you restart your island, you can play any way you want. You can freestyle or you can work on a theme. You can develop relationships with new villagers and you can hunt for the villagers you want on Nook Islands (start collectin those Nook tickets from the beginning because buying them all at once is annoying).

For me, restarting was just what I needed to get a fresh start.

Alternative to Restarting on ACNH

You don’t have to restart your island to get the freshness you are looking for. Since the update at the beginning of 2026, you have the option of using Resetti’s Reset Service. Resetti is the guy that can help you keep the island you have, all your decor, your bells, and your villagers, yet start a new theme.

You can contact him through Isabelle at Resident’s Services. He’ll give you options. Reset a section of your island or your whole island.

If you reset your whole island, make sure you have lots of storage first. Then you can send everything that is placed outside of your house back to storage. Decor, flowers, etc. But you can’t reset trees and paths.

You’re going to have to do any terraforming necessary (flatten and rebuild?) and dig up the trees. If you’ve laid custom paths, you’re going to have to manually kick away each block. This takes massive amounts of time.

I have also gone the Resetti reset route and I had a huge beach on half my island and getting rid of that took ages. I also had a lake in the middle of my island so I had to fill that in. Wow. Talk about grinding!

Pro Tip: Create A Dream Address!

Whether you decide to restart your ACNH island or use Resetti’s Reset Service, go create a dream address before you do anything.

If you go the Resetti route, you won’t be able to revisit your own DA on the same console but other people can visit it. If you have a friend who plays, you could possibly get them to visit it and maybe even do a screen recording if they have the ability to do that. OBS Studio will let you take large screen recordings so this might be an option.

However, if you completely restart your island and record a DA before you restart, you can visit that DA! I’ve enjoyed visiting Philia several times. This is one of the benefits of doing a complete restart. You can have multiple versions of islands with dream addresses on ACNH to revisit any time you like.

Is Restarting You Island For You?

The answer is always maybe. It depends on what your goals are. What are your reasons? Many people do it and have no regrets. It’s definitely something that will make the game more interesting and challeging.

Others regret it deeply and miss their old island.

Think about it carefully. Why are you considering it? Is a restart necessary or would resetting satisfy you?
