I’ve Seen It Myself!
I was playing Fortnite with my daughter when I saw it. One of the Override Consoles had “gg grumpygran1948” scrolling across the top. At first I thought she’d been in my lobby, which would have been super cool.
But then I noticed it in another game, and I thought, “No way is she in more than one of my games…”
So what could it be? A glitch? Was it stuck?
But then I looked online in some of my Fortnite groups and other people have posted their own pics!
Override Consoles have been in the game since Chapter 7 Season 4. They aren’t new. When someone claims it, their names get displayed on the scrolling banner. But this name seems to show up in every match. This means it’s likely been hardcoded.
Watch for it today and let me know if you’ve seen it, too?

Who is GrumpyGran1948?
GrumpyGran1948 is the gamer name of Cath Bowie, a 78 year old Grandma from Scotland. She also streams on Twitch under the same name.
Bowie began playing Fortnite in 2017 when her grandson introduced her to the game. She decided she would start streaming. Her teenage grandson said no one would watch a grandma play the game. She took the challenge and did it anyway.
Now? She’s got 24,000+ followers on Twitch and she plays almost every day.
Recently, she was recently named as the world’s oldest female Fortnite streamer in the Guinness World Records Gamer’s Edition for 2027. They announced it shortly after she turned 78 on September 1st.
Bowie calls herself more of a “Fortniter” than a gamer. It’s really the only game she plays. She has stubbornly refused to let age hold her back. But Fortnite? The called her a GOAT (greatest of all time).
Fortnite Is Quiet About The Override Console Nod
I’ve checked everywhere and there’s nothing from Fortnite on this. They haven’t made a statement about putting her name on the console. They haven’t made it a big deal. Fortnite just did it quietly.
UPDATE: Fortnite hasn’t officially said anything but they did comment on one person’s X post.
They neither confirmed nor denied that this is their doing, but I’m gonna say that they are quietly acknowleding the legitimacy of this silent nod to GrumpyGran1948.
Nevertheless, it’s there and I’m not the only one that sees it. I’m in several Facebook groups and it’s been mentioned several times. If you didn’t know who grumpygran1948 was before, you do now.
So, official or not, it looks like a quiet tribute to the oldest female Fortnite streamer to me!
Not the First Time Fortnite Has Made Quiet Tributes
I’ve only been playing Fortnite for a couple years and I’ve seen them making quiet tributes to players before. And apparently, this isn’t a new thing.
If you were playing in 2018, you might remember the Chappadoodle memorial. A YouTuber called Muselk attempted to rescue another player named Chappadoodle with a golf cart. It didn’t go as planned and they both died. But Epic put a gravestone memorial on the spot where they died with a stack of tires so no one else could get stuck there. Guinness listed it as the first player memorial in Fortnite.
Also in 2018 there was the “Orange Shirt Kid” who submitted a dance to the Epic #BoogieDown contest. He didn’t win but the community rallied together to petition over 11,000 signatures, using the hashtag #JusticeforOrangeShirtKid. In Season 4, Epic added a free “Orange Justice” emote.
In 2025, a Reddit Fortnite player shared that one of the RolyPoly creatures reminded them of their late sister, Olive. A permanent statue of the Olive RolyPoly was added to the map in v37.40 update. I remember going to the statue and dropping gold loot in front of it with some other players.
More recently, a story went around about the pink ghost island. A player who goes by the name AverageDad mentioned that he always landed there to pay tribute to his mom who had passed away from cancer recently. He said that she loved PacMan and pink flowers (the island is covered in cherry blossom trees and petals) and landing there made him feel closer to her. Players started landing there too, paying their respects by dropping crowns and loot at the consoles, not fighting, and dancing with each other. Shortly after that, many noticed that there is a vase of pink flowers on the seat beside the console.
I love the way Epic quietly honors their community in the game. They don’t make a big thing about it. There’s rarely ever an official announcement. And it looks like this is exactly what they’ve done with the GrumpyGran1948 console.
It’s Never Too Late
I love the whole story around GrumpyGran1948. Not just the console but her story. She started playing on a dare from her grandson basically, and look what it turned into!
It’s never too late to do what makes you happy, to learn a new skill, to try something new. Cath Bowie has proved that and now her name is in front of millions as inspiration.
She has certainly inspired me. One day, I’m going to break her record!
