Feeling Overwhelmed, Unfocused, and Out of Sorts? You’re Not Alone!
A little gamer self-care is necessary if you don’t want to lose yourself in the world of video games. Let’s be real – a lot of us play games because it disables our ability to think about other things. For many of us, thinking is something we do too much – about the bills, work, friends, cooking, outside. This list just gets longer the more we think about it!
So, we play video games and don’t think about it.
Adulting is damn hard, even when you’re supposed to be an adult. I’m at level 55 in the game of life and I still feel like someone made a huge mistake when they decided I should be an adult and have adult repsonsibilities! Really – I mean, who thought it was a good idea to put me in charge of my own money (as I buy more V-bucks so I can buy skins in my favorite game).
But self-care is necessary and I’m going to give you some tips that work for me. They might not work for you, but if you haven’t tried them yet, give them a shot. It doesn’t hurt to try.
My Top Tips for Gamer Self-Care
- One thing at a time. Stop trying to do it all. Really. Apparently, not everyone has an all or nothing attitude. Not everyone thinks, “If I can’t lead a perfectly healthy and well-balanced life, I might as well just do whatever I want and not think about it.” It’s ok to work on one thing at a time and it’s probably a good thing. If you work on one thing at a time, even if it takes you months to make it a habit, you’re more likely to be successful. Then, you’ll be more likely to believe that you can be successful with the next thing you try.
- Start with the easiest thing first. If your goal is to make more money, what’s the absolutely easiest thing you can do to take a step towards that goal. Maybe it’s picking up an extra shift at work once a week. Maybe it’s doing a side-gig once a week. Or perhaps it’s just asking your boss for a raise. Think of your overall goal and then decided what is the simplest thing you can do to reach it.
- Do one thing first thing in the morning to take care of yourself. Drink a glass of water. Take your meds. Go for a five minute walk. Eat a piece of toast. It doesn’t matter what you choose. Just start with one thing and do it right away when you get out of bed.
- Always keep a water bottle beside you. Even if you don’t drink it all, just keep a bottle of water nearby. You can’t drink it if it isn’t there, can you? But if it is there and you see it, you’re more likely to take a sip. And if you have to buy that fancy water bottle to be inspired to drink more water, well, I get that (as I look at my many water bottles building up).
- Gaming is perfectly fine as a stress outlet. As Eleanor says, “It’s ok to just play your comfort game.” Sure, you should maybe go to the gym more. And you should likely get more sleep. But never feel bad for giving yourself time to relax and not think about life for a while. Just don’t live there. Remember that life happens outside of the game.
- You can do the thing. We all have that thing that we are afraid to do. Maybe you think you can’t do it but you’ve been doing things all your life. Hard things. Were they really that hard? Or was it all the thinking about it that happened before you did the thing that was hard? Just remember that you have done things in the the past and you can do this thing, too; and the sooner it is done the sooner you can stop thinking about it?
- Forgive yourself. Everyone screws up. We all make mistakes. And the thing is, you might be the only person who is still thinking about it. So, just forgive yourself. You’re worthy of forgiveness.
