Is Anyone Really Making Money from Phone Games? (Updated December 2025)

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready…

I’m testing out phone apps so you don’t have to

I wasn’t going to write this article because I feel like it’s overdone. People test apps so you don’t have to. But I’m going to write this anyway because, as a gamer, I just want to make some money from having a bit of fun playing games. Is that too much to ask?

I’m not new to phone games. I’ve honestly enjoyed them for a long time. In fact, I was playing phone games long before I got on any console.

And I’d seen the ads about how you can make money playing games on your phone a million times. I just blew them off because, really — everyone knows it’s a scam.

Or is it?

Ok, the ad with the girl who lives in a penthouse condo and pays for it by playing BestPlay is exaggerated. As are the other ads that suggest you can make a living by playing games on your phone.

SPOILER: You’re not going to be able to quit your day job by playing games all day long! Even if you did play games all day long, you’re not going to make enough to live off of.

But could you fund your coffee habit? Or maybe make enough to buy some games for your favorite console? Or pay for a nice dinner once a month?

YES!

The screenshot above is legit. You can see the dates and everything. And if you enjoy a bit of fun and casual phone gaming while you’re on your break at work or while you’re drinking your morning coffee, why not make a little money?

So here’s the low-down:

I use 4 apps to make money by playing games and taking the odd survey (seriously though — the survey have big promises but they often disqualify you after a few minutes, which is annoying as hell, so they are not my main focus). Here are the apps I use:

  1. MistPlay
  2. FreeCash
  3. TopSurveys
  4. Snakzy

I’ve cashed out on all of these at some point, except the last one and the jury is still out on whether that one is worth my time. I’m giving it a shot.

MistPlay

Honestly, it’s kind of my favorite because, although I can’t cash out to PayPal there are lots of other options that are good for me. Primarily, the game gift cards. I can cash out to get a Playstation card, a Nintendo card, a Google Play card, or an XBox card (I don’t play XBox, but it’s an option). And if you’re not a gamer, there are lots of other options. Amazon, Sephora, UberEats, and more.

Also, you can cash out smaller amounts worth $5 or larger amounts of $50 or more. It depends on what kind of gift card you want and how long you’re willing to wait. Patience is a virtue because the longer you hold out the better value you get for your cash out.

Besides the range of options, I love the choice of games. There’s card games, puzzle games, RPG games and more. I like to mix it up.

Here’s the key to making more gems for cash out fast: Play a wide variety of games.

Don’t settle in to just one game. The longer you play a game and level up, the longer it takes to reach the point where you get gems to cash out for. So, try new games often. You get the most gems for your time at the beginning of games.

I have some favorites that I play no matter how much I earn from them. MonopolyGo, for example. I’m far enough along that it takes forever to reach the next level.

But if I download a new game, I can get to the first few levels pretty easily. So, I play a lot of different games to get gems that contribute to payout.

If a game bores me and I’m not going to keep playing it, I just delete it off my phone. Unfortunately, it will stay in the MistPlay app as one of your games forever, even if you uninstall it from your phone. Just ignore it though and it will move to the back of your queue.

Now, what you really want to know…

How much have I made from MistPlay?

I’ve cashed out a $50 Playstation card and a $10 Amazon card. I got bored after that and stopped playing for a while but when I came back to it, nothing was lost. And there were new games to play.

So, if you get bored, it’s ok to take a break.

And yes, you can make money from referrals. I haven’t really tried to do that in the past but I figure I’ll give it a shot.

You can sign up under me on my website (scroll to the bottom for the apps I recommend) and you’ll likely get some kind of bonus, too.

Update: I recently cashed out a $25 Amazon gift card. That makes $85 earned from playing games with MistPlay.

FreeCash

I only started using this app recently but it’s been the one to payout the most. And I almost gave up on it.

FreeCash offers games and surveys. I’ve done a bit of both.

The surveys are always iffy. Some of them pay peanuts. Some pay more. A lot of them disqualify you or are broken. But I have made a buck or so from them.

The games aren’t bad but the payouts are minimal. It’s the kind of reward where you have to reach certain levels in the game to get a reward. And there’s often a time frame involved.

The game that has been most interesting to me is an idle game — you don’t actually have to do a lot of work. In fact, you can just leave it running on your phone (plug your phone in, obviously; make sure you’re on WiFi; set your phone so it doesn’t turn off after a minute or two) and still make progress.

I’ve been playing Idle Bank Tycoon. Playing is a generous word though. Mostly, I set it up to run and do other things. If I’m close to the phone, I’ll run an ad to make more and progress faster in the game. Once in a while, you take a bit of time to level up your marketing department or your lobby or your managers.

I’m actually “playing” the game right now.

But the games and the surveys are not the best way to make money with FreeCash. It’s through referrals. And you don’t even have to work to get them!

I found out about this accidentally. I had actually given up on the app and was going to delete it because I wasn’t finding many surveys and the games weren’t very appealing until I found Idle Bank Tycoon. But I procrastinate a lot.

So, I didn’t delete it and then 4 or 5 days later I opened it and I had enough to cash out. WHAT?

I’m not sure exactly how this work but I think if someone signs up for the app and they don’t claim a referral, they get assigned to a random player as their referral. Because the bulk of the money I’ve made has come from referrals of people I don’t know!

So, you don’t necessarily make money every day but…I’ve cashed out several times now and the money is in the bank!

If you want to give it a go, just go to my website and scroll to the bottom to see the apps I recommend.

To date I’ve cashed out $39 (CA) from FreeCash and I have a little over $5 in my account right now.

Dec. 26/25 – According to the app, I’ve made over $400 from games on this app. Referrals have slowed significantly but I am still making money from the games. The last withdrawal I made was largely due to hitting some major milestones in an idle game.

This is the newest app I’m using. I cashed out the very first day I used it. I found a couple surveys that worked right away. One of them happened to be a decent paying one and I had $5 before I knew it.

The cash out is only $5 for this app so I decided to see if I would actually get the money, cashed out, and it was in my PayPal account in minutes. That fast.

So, I’m definitely giving this more time.

The surveys on TopSurveys are better than FreeCash. I don’t qualify for all of them but I’d say I have about a 50/50 success rate. Some of them have higher payouts than others but I like that you can sort the surveys by highest paying or by length. So if you only have five minutes, you can do a short one.

Also, the surveys offered to you change all the time. So, it’s worth it to check in often.

The games that are offered are more of those low payout unless you play for quiet a while type of games. But if you find one you’re willing to stick with, it’s worth it. I found a “story” game that I kinda get a kick out of and it’s interesting enough to keep me playing.

So, I’ve cashed out about $20 in this app and I’m going to keep up with it for a while.

Snakzy

I’m still not sure about this one. It’s slow. There are a few games I like. But I’m waiting to hit payout. You have to get to $20 on your first cash out. So, I’m not recommending it yet.

Update: Haven’t been playing this one much lately. Might delete it.
December 26 update: I don’t know why but I haven’t been playing games on this app much. I’m not fond of many of the selections of games. So, I still haven’t hit payout yet. But I’m so close I want to at least get the minimum! LL

Tips to make money with phone apps:

With the games, try a variety of them. Don’t be afraid to delete them if they aren’t fun.

Each app usually has a daily quest section. You can earn a bit more by doing the quests.

Play the ads. They’ll get you to cash out faster. Or don’t play the ads and try not to focus on the money. After all, this is supposed to be fun so if playing the ads isn’t part of the fun, just skip them.

Here’s the bottom line: this isn’t going to work for you if you’re not someone who likes to sit around passively wasting time on your phone. But if you’re playing games anyway, why not give this a try?

You CAN make money. But is it worth your time? That’s up to you.
