No Matter What Age You Are, Life Can Be Overwhelming
Even though this blog is for gamers, adulting is hard so, I think it’s important to talk about things other than just games. Because gamers are people, too. We struggle with life and finding balance and making things work, just like everyone else.
Sometimes I feel like this is even more true for gamers. A lot of us are neurodivergent and we use games as a distraction from the realities of life. Unfortunately, at some point, we can’t avoid life and we have to deal with it, right?
That’s why I’m starting this series.
From time to time, I’m going to talk about some of the things I struggle with. Yes, at my age, level 55, I still find that adulting is hard. Although I’m not diagnosed officially, I probably have ADHD (my mom, daughter, and granddaughter all have it; two of the three diagnosed officially) and I’m unmedicated. I struggle with things like working, paying my bills, rejection dysphoria, emotional dysregulation, and most of the typical challenges.
Adulting Is Hard But Not Impossible
One of the things I have learned through therapy (because I’m unmedicated) is that nothing is impossible. Hard, yes. Challenging, yes. But not impossible.
It’s just a matter of finding something that works for you. And if you haven’t found it yet, that’s ok. Just keep trying and at some point, you’ll find something that helps. Something that helps you pay your bills. Something that helps you feel like a real person. Something that helps you get through the hard times and remember that there are good times worth living for.
Adulting Is Hard But There Are Helpful Tools
I’ll admit – I love my phone. Not just because of social media (I do use social media a lot though). I love to find a good app that helps me with all the adulting tasks that people insist we must do. It can’t be boring though. It’s got to be colorful and interesting.
Even better if I can find tools that help turn adulting into a game!
In this series, I’m going to talk about the tools I use that inspire me to get shit done. Some of my tools help me focus on self-care while others help me get things done. Productivity tools can be very helpful. I even have some apps that help with managing money.
When you are choosing a tool to help you with some aspect of your life, I think it’s really important to understand that what works for me might not work for you. Each of us needs different things to inspire us to get shit done.
For me, I like an app that has a bit of a gamification aspect to it. I like rewards of all kinds. I especially like tools that give me monetary rewards but other things work, too – badges, streaks, cheers from friends.
